Ashwini Vaishnaw, the current Railway Minister since July 2021, brings a unique blend of technical expertise and administrative experience. Born on July 18, 1970, he holds degrees in engineering and business, and before entering politics, he was a 1994 batch IAS officer in Odisha, where he led disaster relief efforts during the 1999 super cyclone. Elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2019, Vaishnaw also holds the portfolios for Communications and Electronics & Information Technology.

Vaishnaw’s time as Railway Minister has focused on a number of key initiatives: Significant progress has been made in Infrastructure Development, particularly on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which includes the Anji Khad bridge. A top priority has been Safety and Modernization, with the push for the KAVACH anti-collision system and the use of advanced LHB coaches. Vaishnaw has also focused on Digital Initiatives, and has worked to improve Freight and Passenger Capacity through schemes like VIKALP and the operation of numerous special trains. He actively shares updates on project progress through social media, emphasizing transparency. His goals are clear: a modern, safe, and efficient railway system that supports India’s development, with a focus on indigenous production through the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The latest Railway Budget for FY 2024-25, presented by Ashwini Vaishnaw, is a landmark with a record allocation of ₹2.62 lakh crore, signaling a strong government commitment to transforming the railway network. A substantial ₹1.08 lakh crore is specifically for safety measures, emphasizing the phased implementation of the Kavach system across 44,000 km in the next five years. The budget also underscores infrastructure expansion and modernization, with allocations for new railway lines, track doubling, and electrification, as well as focused funding for key states. There’s a dedicated focus on sustainability, with emphasis on railway electrification, water conservation, waste reduction, and exploring renewable energy sources. Passenger capacity is also a priority, with 2,500 new coaches planned. Further, the budget supports the creation of new economic corridors for energy, minerals, cement, and port connectivity, with the aim of improving logistics and reducing transportation costs. Enhancing passenger comfort is also a key objective, with upgrades planned for stations and a goal to overhaul 40,000 train bogies to meet Vande Bharat standards, ensuring social inclusion and accessibility for all passengers. The budget represents an effort toward a safer, more efficient, inclusive, and environmentally friendly railway system, with a focus on connecting remote and underserved areas.
